Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is capable of acquiring multi-dimensional physical datasets in the form of high-resolution images and spectroscopy [11] [12] [13][14], providing us with an ideal. The advent of atomic force microscopy (AFM), one technique in a family of new microscopies called scanning probe microscopies, has recently opened a wide range of novel applications for microbiologists.

This chapter focuses on the use of AFM in microbiology. Rather than providing an exhaustive review of the literature in this area, the chapter emphasizes methods and gives recommendations for.
